Foods & Superfoods

Everyday foods, “superfoods”, sugar, carbs and more.

Acai Berries

Foods & Superfoods False

Açaí berries and açaí juice cause rapid weight loss and detox the body.

Açaí is rich in antioxidants like many berries, but there is no strong clinical evidence that it causes rapid fat loss or removes toxins in humans.

Avocado

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Avocado is so healthy that its calories do not matter for weight gain.

Clinical trials suggest avocados can support satiety and fit into weight-loss diets, but they are still energy-dense and can contribute to weight gain if total calories are too high.

Blueberries

Foods & Superfoods True

Blueberries are a brain superfood that can support memory and heart health when eaten regularly as part of a balanced diet.

Human studies suggest regular blueberry intake can modestly improve some measures of cognition and support heart and metabolic health, likely due to their high anthocyanin and polyphenol content.

Broccoli Cruciferous

Foods & Superfoods False

Eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables guarantees that you will not get cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables contain compounds that may help lower cancer risk, but they cannot fully prevent cancer and many other factors like genetics, smoking and infections also play a role.

Celery Juice

Foods & Superfoods False

Celery juice has unique detox powers that cleanse the liver and cure chronic diseases.

Celery juice contains water, vitamins and antioxidants, but there is no solid evidence that it uniquely detoxifies the liver or cures conditions like autoimmune disease, cancer or chronic infections.

Chia Seeds

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Chia seeds are a guaranteed fat-burning superfood that makes you lose weight without changing anything else.

Chia seeds are high in fiber and healthy fats and can support fullness, but human trials show only small or no direct effects on weight when nothing else changes.

Coconut Oil

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Coconut oil is a heart-healthy superfood for everyone and is better than other cooking oils.

Coconut oil is high in saturated fat and can raise LDL (bad) cholesterol. Some studies show neutral or mixed effects, but major heart organizations still advise limiting it and preferring unsaturated oils like olive or canola.

Dark Chocolate

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

You can eat as much dark chocolate as you like every day because it is a heart-healthy superfood.

Cocoa flavanols in dark chocolate may benefit blood vessels and blood pressure, but typical chocolate bars also contain sugar and saturated fat, and large servings add many calories.

Fatty Fish Salmon

Foods & Superfoods True

Eating salmon and other fatty fish a few times per week can support heart health as part of a balanced diet.

Many studies show that regular intake of oily fish rich in omega-3 fats is linked with lower risk of heart disease and can improve triglycerides and other markers.

Fermented Foods

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Fermented foods like yogurt and kefir automatically cause weight loss, no matter what else you eat.

Fermented foods can support a healthier gut and may modestly improve weight and metabolic markers when part of a calorie-controlled diet, but they do not guarantee weight loss on their own.

Ghee Clarified Butter

Foods & Superfoods False

Ghee is a slimming superfood that burns belly fat and can be eaten freely without affecting cholesterol.

Ghee is mostly saturated fat. While small amounts can fit into a healthy diet and may have some benefits, there is no good evidence it burns belly fat, and overeating it can worsen cholesterol levels.

Goji Berries

Foods & Superfoods Inconclusive

Goji berries are a miracle anti-ageing food that dramatically extends life in humans.

Goji berries are rich in antioxidants and a few small human studies suggest benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol and eye health, but there is no proof they dramatically extend lifespan.

Green Smoothies Juices

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Green smoothies and juices are the best way to detox the body and can safely replace meals every day.

There is very little evidence that juice or smoothie "detox" plans remove toxins, and strict juice-only cleanses can reduce gut-friendly fiber and sometimes worsen markers of inflammation.

Kale

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Kale is so healthy that everyone can eat unlimited amounts of it raw with no downside.

Kale is very nutrient-dense, but like other cruciferous greens it contains goitrogens and oxalates that can cause problems for some people at very high intakes, especially when eaten raw every day.

Matcha Green Tea

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Matcha green tea dramatically boosts metabolism so you lose large amounts of weight without changing your lifestyle.

Matcha and green tea catechins may slightly increase fat burning during exercise and can support metabolic health, but the extra effect on weight loss in humans is small when diet and activity stay the same.

Nuts Almonds

Foods & Superfoods False

Nuts like almonds always cause weight gain because they are very high in fat.

Many trials and long-term studies find that regular nut intake does not lead to expected weight gain and may even support better weight control, likely because nuts are filling and not all of their calories are absorbed.

Olive Oil

Foods & Superfoods False

Extra-virgin olive oil is just another fat and has no special heart-health advantages compared with butter.

Large trials of Mediterranean-style diets and other studies show that using extra-virgin olive oil in place of saturated fats like butter is linked with lower rates of heart disease and better blood pressure and cholesterol profiles.

Spirulina

Foods & Superfoods False

Spirulina powder is a proven cure for obesity.

Some small studies suggest spirulina supplements may slightly improve weight and cholesterol when combined with diet changes, but there is no evidence that it cures obesity.

Superfood Powders

Foods & Superfoods False

Superfood powders and greens powders can fully replace fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet.

Experts agree that powders may help fill small gaps but cannot replace the fiber, texture and full mix of nutrients found in whole fruits and vegetables.

Turmeric Curcumin

Foods & Superfoods Misleading

Turmeric shots or golden milk by themselves cause major weight loss and can reverse obesity.

Curcumin supplements may produce small improvements in weight or waist size in some studies, but the effects are modest and not strong enough to reverse obesity on their own.
